Many families assume Social Security helps pay for a funeral. The reality is far more limited — and knowing it in advance helps you plan for the real gap.
The $255 lump-sum death payment
When a worker who paid into Social Security dies, the SSA may pay a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 to an eligible survivor. That figure was set in 1954 and has never increased. Against a median funeral around $8,300, it covers roughly 3%.
Who can receive it
- A surviving spouse who lived with the deceased at the time of death.
- If none, a spouse or child already eligible for benefits on the deceased’s record.
- If there’s no qualifying spouse or child, no payment is made.
