If you or your loved one served, the VA offers meaningful burial benefits that many families never fully claim. Knowing them in advance can save thousands.
The VA burial allowance
For deaths on or after October 1, 2025:
| Non-service-connected, burial allowance | up to $1,002 |
| Non-service-connected, plot allowance | up to $1,002 |
| Service-connected, burial allowance | up to $2,000 |
Amounts are periodically adjusted. Confirm current figures at va.gov.
Burial in a national cemetery
Eligible veterans can be buried in a VA national cemetery at no cost, including the gravesite, opening and closing, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and perpetual care. Because a private plot and marker often run $2,000-$3,000+, this is frequently the single largest saving available.
